Friedrich Nerly (1807-1878) was a German painter and lithographer known for his landscape and architectural paintings. He was born in Stuttgart, Germany, and studied at the Stuttgart Academy of Fine Arts and in Munich under the famous painter Carl Rottmann.
Nerly traveled extensively throughout Europe, painting and sketching landscapes and buildings. He was particularly drawn to the beauty of Italy, and spent a considerable amount of time in Florence, Venice, and Rome.
Nerly's paintings are characterized by their meticulous attention to detail and their ability to capture the essence of a place. His depictions of Italian cities, particularly Venice, are considered some of his finest works.
In addition to his paintings, Nerly was also a skilled lithographer and produced numerous lithographic prints of his works. He was instrumental in popularizing the technique of lithography in Germany during the mid-19th century.
Nerly died in Rome in 1878, but his legacy lived on through his sons, Oswald Nerly and Friedrich August Nerly, who were also accomplished painters. Today, his paintings can be found in museums and private collections throughout Europe.
